Over the years, the need for direct-to-locomotive (DTL) fueling has increased due to the use of distributed power and the ever increasing cost of fixed facilities. BNSF required a new type of railroad fueling facility, which it termed a DTL Hub, in order to meet the needs of DTL operations and environmental and SPCC requirements.
This type of facility was first designed by Argus staff and constructed for two operations at BNSF’s Sheridan, Wyoming Yard and Donkey Creek facility just outside of Gillette, Wyoming. The hub incorporated all fueling related DTL operations relative to tank cars, storage tanks, and tank trucks into one space. Spill containment was also integrated for all three aspects of the hub.
The facility was designed for use by either railroad personnel or contractor. This compact facility was placed at a track extension convenient to the spotting of tank cars, as well as for truck access. The hub met the needs of BNSF for consolidating its DTL operations at each location into one area, while still meeting SPCC requirements.
